Equipment Information

We will be using a dolly mainly so that we can have the tracking shot of the main characters walking into the room through the door. The dolly will allow us to do it so that it is nice and smooth and without it being shaky. We can also adjust it so that it is near the ground this means that we can follow the footsteps of the characters. The dolly that we will be using will only be a small one that we can push along the floor rather thana big one that can be sat one. The dolly will only be used for a small amount of the filming but it will still help us get the effect that we want.

A tripod is used to stabilize and elevate a camera. All tripods have three legs and a mounting head to couple with a camera. There is a type of mechanism that allows you to rotate and tilt the camera when it is mounted on the tripod. We will be using a tripod to raise the camera to the preferred height and to steady the camera to make shots smoother. All tripods have three legs so you can have a variation of heights and a mounting head to support the camera. We will be using the tripod to achieve different camera angles.

We will be using a HD camera to film our entire piece. This is to ensure a good qualtiy piece of filming. The camera can be handheld or placed on a tri-pod to use when filming. Using the camera handheld means we will be able to achieve all the camera angles we have planned to use in our piece but however can be shaky so it is sometimes prefered to use the tripod to aid with steadiness. The camera is easy to use and enables us to take many clips which we can then edit later on the Mac - Final cut express software.

Audition Information

If the people who have auditions are at the same school as our group then we have arranged in their 'free lessons' to audition and at least 2 of our group members will be there to set up the camera and talk through their audition, as shown on the audition videos. Additionally, these auditions will be held in the media suite as then it will be easier and quicker to put these straight on to the Mac for assessing with our group. For all the others that either could not attend these or the ones that were not attending our school we met after school hours and got permission from a specific teacher if we may use a room to hold our auditions in on the 4th of January.

Audition Information

For our audition process, we would need to find 3 possible candidates for each character who would fit the role of the character with the ability to act to a high standard to ensure our filming would be of high quality. The auditions would consist of a short introduction about the role that would need filling, the candidates acting and an evaluation of the piece to conclude who we would use to perform in our piece.

People who audition will be given this short script to read aloud, depending on which character they were auditioning for, and as a group we would assess how well they got on. All auditions will take place before our main filming piece so that we would be fully prepared when it came to filming.

Casting is a main aspect of the filming as the people we choose to film must fit and relate to the character in order to gain the best possible outcome.

Our auditions will take place in the first week of November 2011 for all of our 7 characters.

Lighting

We have decided to film interior rather than exterior, this is because we will be filming in a pub or restaurant which are normally quite dark, they normally have small lamps or fires for the lighting so its is low key lighting.

This type of lighting gives a homely and friendly atmosphere so by having the characters barging into this atmosphere it will be more disputable therefore showing the idea of Todorvo's theory. The only problem that we could come across when trying to film in this type of lighting is that it may be too dark to see the characters when the film is played back.

We did have a look at filming in an exterior setting so that we didn't find it difficult filming in such a dark setting, but this would mean that we will be filming using natural lighting and as we are filming in the middle of November it will be getting dark in the early evening so we will have to film between 12 and 4pm. This could then cause problems when trying to get the location so if we film in the interior setting we can film at any time we like. We may have to use extra lamps or turn on more lights to make sure that the set isn't too dark.

Most soaps use artificial lighting so that they can guarantee the best effect for the episode. When you use artificial lighting you are in control of what it looks like or how bright or dark it is, that way you have the ability to make it look exactly how you want it to.

Ideas for Magazine

This is our initial idea for what we would like our magazine cover to look like. The cover immediately stands out with the use of bright colours which follows the conventions. We have looked at doing a magazine cover which is a 'Beaulieu Way special'.
The text used for the main cover line is bold and bright which would stand out to the audience. This also questions the audience and makes them want to watch the soap to find out what happens.
The images used for all the storylines show the emotion of the characters through the use of close-up shots and this means that the audience will be able to relate to the characters emotion.
We have decided to follow conventions of the left third so that our magazine would stand out in the shop therefore promoting the soap opera.

Ideas for Poster

This is the initial idea for the poster of our soap opera. As our trailer will be set in a pub, we thought that the characters could pose outside the pub so that the trailer and poster have an immediate connection and the audience will be able to relate to this. All the characters will be wearing high class, glamourous clothing which denotes their wealthiness. The characters work with the props outside the pub, such as the steps and the car. This gives a more relaxed sense to the poster and gives the idea of a photoshoot. The date, time and channel where the soap can be watched is cleverly constructed in the bottom left hand corner. The channel logo is used so the audience can identify with a channel and the time and date is clearly shown and easy to read.
The text we have used for the title and tagline of the soap represents the upper class characters and the colours chosen connote wealth and purity. The poster overall must attract the audience.

Animatic Storyboard

This is our animatic storyboard, it shows the shots that we would like to use in still pictures but by editing them together we can show the transitions at the same time.

Final Script

First scene:
At the start of our trailer we use an Exterior shot with the characters going into a pub/restaurant so it then becomes an interior shot. Whilst this is happening there is no character dialogue.
Second scene:
Within the interior shot we see the characters line up inside the pub / restaurants which shows their different personalites and gives hints to the different storylines coming to the soap.
Once all the characters are lined up a character that is drunk falls over bumping into the characters causing distruption and frustration.
There is a background music playing throughout the entire piece.
At the end of our trailer there will be female voice doing a smooth voiceover, over the music to tell the audience details for the soap opera.
Female voiceover:
Beaulieu Way, channel 7, weekdays at 8:30pm.

We have decided not to use dialogue in the main scenes of our trailer, as we feel that our background music we have carefully thought upon will set the soap opera better than to have dialogue, it will draw the audience in wanting to know more of the characters.

Draft Script Reasoning

We did two draft scripts before we made a finial script we did this in order to gain as much knowledge as possible about what we would need to put in the script for example there would need to be the dialogue the characters were saying, the directions of what they are acting whilst speaking and other things like whats roughly happening in each scene.

Within our first draft script we didn't go into much detail and we didn't write what each individual character would say and what they would do but we simply put what the scenes included and roughly some of the things some of the characters may said.

Within our second draft script we went further into detail writing what happened within the scenes which was more in depth that the first draft before we then went on to what each individual character Will be saying and then we said what would be happening after the characters have spoke before the trailer finished.

Locations

Possible Locations for our Soap Opera trailer.

These are some pictures taken from the interior and exterior of the
Everest Gurkha Restaurant in Chelmsford, the Green Dragon pub in Braintree and the Dog and Gun in Chelmsford. These are possible locations that we may use for the trailer of our soap. We found these location interesting as they were all different and all had a different look and feel to them both inside and out. We chose to use a pub to give the trailer a sense of home a local part of a community which relates well with introducing our characters.
We chose a high class pub in order to match our higher class characters. We will include exterior shots but didn’t want to use a main exterior setting due to the fact that our characters would be in smart dress and the females will be in high heels and other unpractical costumes and props which would make sense for them to be in an interior setting. Between the members in our group we know either people who work in these pubs or people that own these pubs which makes it more practical and easier for us to do so.

We have also looked at another pub called the Angel that we may film our soap opera trailer in, these are some pictures of the exterior of the pub.

Magazine Picture Props.

When we came to make our magazine we had to use a variety of different locations and props that were different to the ones that we used within our trailer. This then shows a range of different story lines that would be used within our actual soap.

We printed a number of £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes so that our character of the rich boy can have them in is pocket or wallet making the pictures more realistic.

For the pictures that are taken of drunken character we have used props of a vodka bottle and a can of beer in order to make the storyline look more realistic.

Character Costumes In Depth

Costumes Information

Photographic Storyboard

This is an establishing shot of the location that we would be using to film our soap opera trailer. It lets the audience know where the soap is filmed and what type of story lines may be involved.

This is a mid shot of some ones feet, this is because in our actual soap opera trailer we want to film our characters walking into the pub or setting. This will build up the tension for the audience and therefore they will want to watch our soap opera more.

This is a picture of a group of people sat at a table, within our piece we want to show people that would be regulars at the location (pub) so that the tension is built up when the new characters enter the location, causing a disruption.

Once again this is the picture of the feet that in the actual trailer would be walking along passed the camera. Within our trailer we want to go from clips of people enjoying themselves in the location to the characters walking into the location. (the pub) This builds up a large amount of tension for the audience which keeps their attention and makes them want to watch the soap opera.

Each of the clips that are of the people that re in the location already will be different, this will show the size of the location and how the people in it are regulars at the location (the pub).

Every time the audience see the feet walk passed the camera it will be a different character, this shows that all of the characters are entering the location. This also helps to build up the tension and also gives the audience connotations of disruption.

Once we have flicked from the feet to the regulars a number of times then it will show the regulars turning to a certain point and by using facial expression they will all look shocked and disgusted at these new people that have caused the disruption.

We will show all of the regulars turning to look at these new characters that have entered.

Finally the camera will pan from the last group of people looking shocked to the long shot of the line of all of our characters, this will then show the audience all of the characters individually, giving them a glimpse of their personalities and story lines that they may be involved in.

Second Storyboard

The first scene will be an establishing shot of the area, to give the audience a sense of scenery. This shot will last for 5 seconds.

The next shot would be a long shot of the exterior of the pub,to give away the setting to the audience. This shot will last 4 seconds.

The next shot would be a tracking shot of the characters as they walk into the pub. This shot will last for 5-8 seconds.

The next shot would be a mid-shot of the front of the pub with the door closed, which is then opened by a character. This shot will last for 4 seconds.

The next shot would be a mid-shot of the front of the pub with the door open. This shot will last for 4 seconds.

The next shot is the main scene, it will be on a long shot with all the characters walk into the pub one by one to introduce the characters. The character's information will be shown at the side of each character on a freeze frame/slow motion shot as they're walking in. This shot will last for about 20-30 seconds.

The next shot will be a split-screen and is used to show the characers as they walk into the pub and the people already in the pubs reactions. This shot will last for 5 seconds.

The characters that walk through the door will then be show walking into a line which will be used by panning the camera round as the last character walks away. This shot will last for around 10-15 seconds.

There will be a long shot showing the line of characters with a gap to show the final character barging through the middle acting 'drunk'. A title above their heads will appear stating 'There's a new team in town'. This shot will last 5 seconds.

The next shot would be a long shot behind the line of characters showing everyone else in the pub to see their reactions, through facial expressions, this shot will last 5 seconds.

The next shot would be a fade to black transition from the previous shot where it would run the titles of the title of the new soap, the channel which the soap will be shown on and the time that it would be shown on. This will last for around 5-10 seconds.

First Draft Storyboard

When thinking of ideas for storylines, we decided as a group that we should do two storyboards with all of our ideas in and pick the one we liked the most with the best ideas. This was our first storyboard:

The scene would start out with a close up of a bouquet of flowers, the speed of the shot would be set to slow motion so that it gives of a sense of 'dream' feel to our piece. This shot will last for 5-10 seconds.

There will be a fade to black transition so that it changes from the bouquet scene to the next scene which will be the wedding. This shot will last for 2-4 seconds.

After the fade to black transition there will a long shot of the bride and her father walking down the aisle. This shot will last for around 5-10 seconds.

The next shot will be a high angle shot of all the guests sitting down with the bride and father walking down the aisle. This shot will last for 5 seconds.

The next shot will be a mid-shot of a young woman singing (diegetic sound) the wedding theme tune song, holding a basket of flowers walking infront of the bride. This shot will last for 6 seconds.

The next shot is another high angle shot of the bride and groom at the alter, we can see the guests watching the ceremony whilst sitting down. This shot will last for 5 seconds.

The next shot would be a tracking shot of all the guests inthe pews to show the audience their facial expressions to set the mood for the wedding. This shot will last for 8 seconds.

The next shot is a long shot as well as a tracking shot, to introduce all the main characters with their names underneath. This shot will last around 20 seconds.

The next shot will be a split screen of the bride and groom at he alter and a girl running in shouting 'I object!' This shot will last 10 seconds.

There will be a mid shot and tracking shot of the guests facial expressions looking shocked at what has just happened. This shot will last for around 5-7 seconds.

The next shot will be a fade to black transition which will read text of our 'tagline' and will last for 5 seconds.

The fade to black transition will continue and will show the title of the soap, the channel and time it will be on. This will last for 5 seconds.
